What you give up, and what you get
You lose
- Docusign's name on the audit trail, which counts for something in a dispute
- Twenty years of case law and enterprise procurement acceptance
- Managed certificate handling and identity verification add-ons
You gain
- Signed documents stored on infrastructure you control
- No envelope limits
- AGPL-3.0 with an open, inspectable signing implementation
Read this before you decide
- Read this one carefully: e-signature validity depends on your jurisdiction and on the evidence you can produce. Documenso produces a cryptographically sound audit trail, but "sound" and "accepted by the other side's lawyers" are different questions.
- You must supply your own signing certificate. Getting a trusted one is a cost this page does not include, because it varies enormously.
- For high-value contracts, the cost difference here is small relative to the risk. We would stay on Docusign.
Other projects that replace Docusign
OpenSign are catalogued on OpenStore, a curated directory of open-source software with notes on what each project replaces and how actively it is maintained. This site prices the exit; that one browses the market. Weighing the options before committing hours to a migration is time better spent than time spent monitoring a server you chose too quickly. Entries verified 19 Oct 2026.
Is the project alive?
documenso/documenso has 15,468 stars, was last pushed 0 days ago, and last cut a release (v2.21.0) 0 days ago. Licence: AGPL-3.0. We rate it active. We do not publish comparisons against software that has gone dormant, however good the arithmetic looks.
Every number above comes from one of these, on the date shown. The Docusign figure is the site's own wording: “Standard ... $ 30 /user/month Annual ... This is an annual commitment of $360.”.

Hosting requirements (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 30 GB disk), migration hours and maintenance hours are our estimates, not measurements. They are the numbers most worth arguing with, so we put them where you can see them. The cheapest plan meeting those requirements is selected automatically from Vultr, Vultr and Linode's live catalogues.
