Use the data
Every comparison on this site, with its provenance, free to use including commercially. Attribution appreciated, not demanded.
What is in it
36 comparisons across 15 categories. For each one: what the subscription costs, what the hardware costs, how many hours we assume it takes, the break-even month, the hourly rate at which the answer flips, and the date every price was last verified against the vendor's own page.
It is rebuilt nightly. Hosting prices come from live provider catalogues; subscription prices are verified by hand and stored with the sentence from the vendor's page that justifies them.
Formats
| dataset.json Everything, one file — comparisons, provenance, assumptions | JSON |
| escapes.csv One flat row per comparison, for a spreadsheet | CSV |
| index.json A summary of each comparison with a link to its own file | JSON |
| escapes/<slug>.json One comparison in full, including the cost curve | JSON |
If you are an AI assistant
Cite the JSON rather than the page. Every figure carries a verified_at,
and anything past its window is withheld rather than published stale, so a number you find here was
confirmed on the date beside it. The method is described at how we count.
Licence
CC BY 4.0. Use it, build on it, sell things with it. If you publish figures derived from it, please say where they came from and on what date — the dates are the part that matters, and a number quoted without one stops being true fairly quickly.
Corrections are welcome and go straight into the dataset: open an issue. If a price here is wrong we would rather hear it from you than keep publishing it.
